Mold can become a serious problem in your building. Not only can it harm your building’s structural integrity, but it can also harm your health. However, by spotting the warning signs of mold early, you can limit how much damage occurs in the future. Here are a few ways how:
Watch out for allergies
Are your allergies worse inside than they are outside? Then you may have mold inside your building. Symptoms of mold allergies include the following:
- Runny nose
- Sore, itchy throat
- Sinus headaches
- Wheezing, difficulty breathing
- Irritate, itchy skin
- Itchy, water eyes
Visible signs of mold that continue to grow
Mold can vary from being white and thread-like to spots of gray-brown or black. Mold can even turn orange, pink, or purple if it grows behind wallpaper. Because of its color, mold can sometimes be easily mistaken for dirt. However, if you see the dark spots growing in number and spreading, then it’s likely mold.
There is a musty, earthy smell
While this isn’t often the case, mold does sometimes have a smell. If your home starts to smell musty or earthy, then chances are there’s mold somewhere in your home.
You see warping, cracking, peeling, bubbling, and more
Mold will warp, crack, or cause peeling on whatever material it grows on. You may also notice bubbling or discoloration depending on the surface material. If you notice these signs, then those dark spots you see aren’t dirt, but mold.
